1. Previous study

There are some researcher conducted research on English writing. One of them is study by Febi Fusia Putri (091000488203063) English Department Of Teacher Training And Education Faculty Mahaputra Muhammad Yamin University Solok. Her Thesis Is The Effectiveness Of Using Contextual Learning Strategy In Teaching Writing Descriptive Text( The Experimental Research on the Eight Grade Students of MTS Lunto at 2013/2014 Academic Year ). She did the research because she want to know effective or not using contextual learning strategy in teaching writing descriptive text. The result of  the study shows that after the treatment, there is a difference in the students’ achievement in writing narrative text. She concluded that contextual teaching and learning strategy gave the positive effect on students’ ability in writing descriptive text. Moreover, it could be concluded that contextual teaching and learning strategy was more effective than teacher explanation strategy. Using contextual teaching and learning strategies also increase students’ motivation and students’ participation during teaching and learning process and also it can develop classroom atsmorphere brightly and fun.

The other research is done by Muhlison (6411028) English Department  of  Tarbiyah Faculty of State Institute For Islamic Studies Walisongo Semarang. His Thesis Is The Effectiveness Of Contextual Teaching And Learning To Teach Reading Comprehension (An Experimental Study at the Eight Grade Students of MTs At-Thosari Kalirejo Ungaran Timur in Academic Year of 2010/2011). She did the research because he wants to  know  the  influence  of  optimizing  of Contextual Teaching and Learning in student reading improvement. In his research he wrote that teaching reading through Contextual Teaching Learning is quite success. It can be seen on the table of the students’ reading scores that the students who learn reading through Contextual Teaching Learning, the average score is 60.00 and Non CTL, the average score is 56.80. They have a significant difference. It means that there is a significant influence of using Contextual Teaching Learning in teaching reading. In other words, the use of Contextual Teaching and Learning in teaching reading has a significant difference to the student’s achievement in reading skill at the eighth grade of MTs At-Thosari Kalirejo, Ungaran Timur.

The other research is done by  Methela Rahman (11363009) Department of English and Humanities (ENH),BRAC University. His  thesis is Using Authentic Materials in the Writing Classes: A Tertiary Level Scenario. He conducted the research to examine the effectiveness of authentic materials in the writing classes at the tertiary level students. In his research he wrote that authentic materials are definitely valuable parts which have to be selected and controlled carefully by the teacher. He tried to explore that textbook materials are undoubtedly a valuable resource but at the same time authentic materials can increase the student‟s potential for writing English language. Through the suitable authentic materials teacher can motivate the students to gather more knowledge about the outside world. Also, the students have the chance to share their predictions and thoughts to the other students and thereby gain confidence in being able to communicate in English. Also, the way the teachers use the authentic material is also very important. Student’s participation is mandatory to make an effective class. Especially while using the authentic materials, both teacher and students have to enthusiastically participate equally in the classroom.

This research has similarities with previous research because the researcher try to use contextual teaching and learning material. The researcher agree with the previous research that contextual teaching and learning materials will improve students ability in writing descriptive text. The difference between this research and the previous research is, this research focuses on designing an English Module using contextual teaching learning material to teach descriptive text, while the previous research is to find out whether the use of contextual teaching and learning material can improve students ability in writing descriptive text.
